HISTORY
In 1956 Hollywood came to Frankston courtesy of producer/director Stanley Kramer’s haunting post apocalyptic classic movie ‘On The Beach’ based on the big screen adaption of our local novelist Nevile Shute’s book.
Starring Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, Anthony Perkins and Donna Anderson, the film tells a story of the world after global nuclear war, and the people of Australia as the planets last surviving land must come to terms with the fact that in a few months all life will be destroyed. The powerful delivery of the film’s cautionary and apocalyptic tale was unprecedented at the time. But the Melbourne based production of the film eventually became epic in its own right. The Beach scenes were filmed right here on Frankston Beach where Sofia Frankston now sits (as the once summer playground of the rich & famous) people frolicked at the beach and yacht races skippered in the sun, the vibe during that time was glamorous, electric & free spirited.
Needless to say that the place looks quite different now, but we at Sofia’s Frankston aim to capture some of that glamour everyday in every meal.
